Bess wakes up one morning by the sound of a shot. Her husband, Halland, is found dead on the main square of the small town where they live, and where everybody knows things about one another. Yet nobody knows why he was killed or by whom. Maybe the shot was fired by accident? A chaos is soon accompanied by new riddles: the disappearance of the next door neighbor, the arrival of an unknown family member, a phone call from Halland’s mobile phone and the discovery of a secret room in the city, from where Halland presumably lived a parallel life. Into this dramatic stream-of-consciousness-like story about the solving of a crime, told in 35 short chapters, the story of Bess’s inner life and family is woven – a story about loss of a daughter ten years ago, and a marriage that Bess left more or less on a sudden impulse. Pia Juul’s novel is elegantly playing with the basic crime elements, but is more of a psychological crime novel where the solving of a murder does not have top priority. Instead, it focuses on what happens to a person when life is turned upside down and all personal relations suddenly become renegotiable.
