illustrations: Pauliina Mäkelä Emilia’s school is infested with mold, and the students are transferred to a floating school on the seashore. At home, Emilia’s mother finds herself a new boyfriend Pertti, who has disgusting table manners. Emilia is really annoyed. Then Simo, Emilia’s best friend starts acting strangely. To top it all off, Emilia’s got the biggest Superguinea job ever: she has to save the Baltic Sea! No one takes the rescue of the Baltic seriously, so Superguinea has to take a firm hand on the situation. She gathers all the lakes of Finland in a Super Garbage Bag, and flies them to a water treatment plant on Venus. Then she issues an ultimatum: if people don’t stop contaminating the water, she won’t bring the lakes back to earth. The book was nominated for the Finlandia Junior award. “Paula Noronen’s Superguinea is an irresistibly funny, madcap book, where nonsense makes sense. It’s not a typical “just for kids” book – it’s a reading experience that captivates readers of all ages with its giggle-inducing, laconic wisecracks. Pauliina Mäkelä’s bold, colour-saturated illustrations are a fine accompaniment to Noronen’s text, as well as its social critique. Noronen balances day to day mishaps with humour, but when it comes to large ethical questions, she is in earnest. Superguinea provides a moral lesson: superpowers must only be used for good.” Finlandia Junior Jury Utländska förlag: Finland, Gummerus Germany, Thienemann |
