Joonas Konstig is a thirty-something author from Helsinki. He graduated from university, but considers the most important education to have come from somewhere entirely different. His idols are Marlon Brando, Norman Mailer and Leonard Cohen. Konstig’s collection of short stories,The Greedy and the Innocent(orig. Ahneet ja viattomat) was nominated for the Helsingin Sanomat First Book prize, and received positive feedback.
Konstig is not your average 9-5 author. “I work the text in my head and then spend perhaps one hour transcribing it. The stories are outlined in my head and get processed manually,” Konstig describes. He finds his subjects from real life situations, and from the world around him. “I may be inspired by a certain picture or situation, which I see or hear. I use it to construct a scene. Some situations are personal, and need converting into a more durable and compact format.” |
