Personal Pronouns is a melodrama. A threatening novel, a violent tale about a family shaken by damage and murder, a family that is so adrift that they don’t even use first names with each other – instead it is I, you, she and we. Following his acclaimed debut Worries Brother (Oron bror) with its inquisitive portrayal of a child’s view of the world, Daniel Sjölin is back with yet another harrowing description from the northern Stockholm suburbs. A novel about threats, violence and degradation. During a rather implausible weekend when the family is besieged by a gang of youths and the sister’s mother is found dead with subsequent visits by the police, we have time for no less than two advanced meals, one of which is a banquet with the ambassador from Ghana as guest of honor.
Daniel Sjölin’s linguistic exploration is now on its second stage, and the terrain is not suited to the faint-hearted or to those who lack imagination. Rights sold: Sweden, Norstedts |
