Javona has married the priest-doctor Rakhenes and has moved, with her baby girl Yvana, from the village of Blossomred to the town of Common Linden-worship, which is dug into a rock. The young couple’s life is not without its problems, however, as a huge red mole that appears on the back of Yvana and causes people around the litle girl to behave in a peculiar way. The high priestess in the village knows that the mole oozes evil into the surrounding environment, and that this evil is almost impossible to eradicate. A message arriving from the town of Satosales in Autumn Land urges the inhabitants of Common Linden to help bring down a fanatic Oak-worshipper who tries to gain power. Zara has sent Adaira and Merkinos to Satosales, masked as wine merchants, to investigate the country's social structure, in particular the power and influence of religions that oppress women.They also investigate the possibility of infiltrating the back rooms of tavernas, spas and temples with new ideas.
