2007 Pet Shop Girls

Orig. title: Lemmikkikaupan tytöt

14 year old Jasmin Martin disappears. The last confirmed sighting of Jasmine took place in the first week of December. A teenager who resembles Jasmin is spotted at a local kiosk, in the company of a middle aged man, holding a Chinchilla rabbit in her lap. When Jasmin’s friend Linda is found dead, the investigation takes a new turn. The mother does not want to lose hope, but instead she hopes that her daughter will be found and returned home.

But the year of the peacock is a year of desires and temptations. Having grown up in the shadow of a concrete factory Lido has since created a flourishing business - a pet shop, where everything is possible and anything can be bought. He just needs more young girls and paying customers, like The Baptist.

Jasmin’s story is narrated 12 years after her disappearance, in an unknown location somewhere in Europe. It is the story of how teenage girls disappear into the dark recesses of the sex trade, where they cannot be reached by worried mothers or trained police officers.

"Pet Shop Girls rises above the twenty or so novels of Anja Snellman's output as the most touching and linguistically polished of them all." Lapin kansa

”An important social address.” Pohjolan Sanomat

”Anja Snellman approaches a difficult subject in a blunt, no-nonsense way. Her fine, dispassionate language provides an excellent mirror for the painful nature of the subject.” Hämeen Sanomat
